Trades and Crafts
A variety of Trades and Crafts have played an important part in the East Anglian story and can be seen in the Museum displays. These include:
- Brewing and malting - this includes a selection of hand tools and locally made machinery dating from the 1840's such as Boby malt screens, malting tiles, photographs and archive material.
- Ropemaking - the Museum has a rope walk and its associated sack printer from the Haverhill Ropeworks, a company started in 1880 which specialised in agricultural ropes.
- Brush making equipment.
- Horsehair and silk manufacture - including many items from the Glemsford Horsehair Factory.
- Basket making equipment and products from Mullins of Stowmarket (1880's to 1965). This company, who employed a fair number of people, managed half the osier beds in Suffolk in the 1920's.
Also, the Museum has hurdles and charcoal made on site, alongside a very active Print Workshop, manned by a dedicated team of volunteers.
