Remembering the Museum in your will

The Museum owes its existence to the generosity of the Longe sisters who owned the farm land, cottages, Abbot’s Hall house and walled garden and placed these in trust to be used as a museum.  The Museum was opened in 1967 and benefited from the generosity of other local people who donated equipment, objects, buildings, archives, stories and their time to enable the museum to be the award winning site it is today.   Now as then, leaving a gift to the Museum in your Will is one of the most effective ways to ensure that we can continue to safeguard and celebrate the Suffolk way of life and improve people’s lives through engagement with heritage.

The museum is a charity and all gifts to charities are exempt from inheritance tax. n addition, in 2011 the government launched the Legacy 10 scheme under which anyone leaving 10% of their taxable estate to charity will pay a reduced rate of inheritance tax on the rest of their estate. A bequest from you, no matter the amount, will be warmly welcomed and faithfully remembered as it shapes the future of this much-loved museum.

If you find yourself a beneficiary of a will, you can make a gift of all or part of your inheritance to the museum under a Deed of Variation.  Amounts transferred are free of Inheritance Tax.

Choose to remember the museum in your Will is a personal decision but if you would like to inform us of your intention to do so we would love to thank you for your support.

Types of legacies or gifts:

A Residuary Gift/legacy

This is a gift of the remainder of your estate after all payments, taxes and other bequests have been made. This allows you to take care of your personal commitments and still make a meaningful donation.  This could be any percentage of an estate.

A Pecuniary Gift/legacy

This is a fixed sum of money decided by you.  Of course, the value of a pecuniary gift will decrease over time as the cost of living increases.

A Specific Gift/legacy

This is a gift of something valuable including an object, books, work of art, machinery. If you are considering leaving a specific gift, we would encourage you to discuss your plans with our curatorial team in complete confidence.

A will is very personal and we advise you to seek professional advice when drafting a new will or updating an existing one.  This ensures you receive confidential expert guidance and your Will is tailored to your particular circumstances.
